What is a Paul Harris Fellow?

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Once you’re a Paul Harris Fellow, you’re a member of the Paul Harris Society.

What is the Paul Harris Society?

Named after Rotary’s founder, the Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotary members and friends of The Rotary Foundation who contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or approved global grants. The purpose of the Paul Harris Society is to honor and thank individuals for their generous, ongoing support of The Rotary Foundation.

Where does the $1000 contribution go?

Your giving promotes peace, fights disease, provides clean water, saves mothers and children, supports education, and grows local economies through grants that:

  • Bring peace-building seminars to 200 teachers and 1,300 students in Uganda.
  • Distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets and medical services that help prevent malaria in Mali.
  • Train teachers who are establishing an early-childhood education center in South Africa.
  • Provide water filters, toilet blocks, and hygiene training to prevent fluorosis in a community in India.
  • Fund a scholarship for a medical professional to research ways to minimize mortality rates among premature babies in Italy.
  • Protect children around the world from polio.

Rotary districts often honor new members of the Paul Harris Society by presenting them with a certificate and chevron at a district or club event.

Last week, friends, family and Rotarians from near and far paid their respects and said goodbye to a dear friend, Rotarian and colleague, Don Forsythe.
Don was known for his warmth, humor, unwavering spirit and unshakeable commitment to service in Rotary (and beyond). He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Don’s family.
Rest in peace, Don.
